The end of the hero’s journey symbolizes this permanent change in the hero, where he/she will never be the same. Haroun was inevitably going to be the hero defeating the villain Khattam-Shud through trials and tribulations, to finally restore order and life to Kahani (in both realms.) However, I was more surprised by Haroun’s state of mind at the end of the story. With the hero’s journey in the back of my mind, I think I anticipated a lot of what was going to happen at the end. A pretty good ending for a wonderfully strange story… The Gups won saving Batcheat, Haroun defeated Khattam-Shud saving the Saving, Chups united with Gups, Kahani is no longer separated by sun and darkness, Haroun went home and Rashid got his groove back and Soraya came back….and all was fine in the city that finally remembered its name. I’m kinda relieved knowing Haroun got a “happy” ending but at the same time, there are still so many questions I have. So we’ve made it to the end of the story. When the sun rises on the dark land of Chup, it melts the shadows away. He uses a substance called Wishwater-given to him by Iff-to wish for the sun to rise. Khattam-Shud forbids free speech and has enacted a series of decrees called the Silence Laws, which forbid his people from speaking. Haroun learns that Khattam-Shud has a plan to plug the hole that produces the currents of stories. The Sea of Stories is under threat by an evil ruler, Khattam-Shud, whose name means “The End.” Iff travels with Haroun to Kahani, a fictional moon of earth that contains the Sea of Stories-the source of all stories and creativity. Rashid was a subscriber to a storytelling service, and Iff has disconnected it. That night, Haroun learns something disturbing-a water genie named Iff has taken his father’s storytelling gift. Shortly after, Rashid finds that he has run out of stories to tell. In the first chapter, Haroun’s mother leaves her husband for a man named Mr. Haroun’s father, Rashid, is a celebrated storyteller known for his ability to entertain, instruct, and persuade crowds on behalf of politicians. Haroun lives with his parents in a city that is so sad it no longer remembers its name. The novel begins with a young boy named Haroun Khalifa.
